Dear Drayton,
This isn’t strictly about marketing or copywriting but given your experience working in agencies do you have any advise regarding conflicts?
By this to clarify I of course mean having 2 or more clients who use you for marketing but compete with each other. Our policy is one of silence and secrecy, I’m curious to hear your thoughts on the matter.
Very interesting question.
There are three options.
1. Keep quiet and hope for the best,
2. Say you’ll only work for one client in a given field – and charge the client for giving exclusivity.
3. Specialise in a given field (e.g. charity) usually but not always not taking competitive accounts.
The problem with the first is that you can’t boast about your clients.
Greetings Drayton from Danceman Copywriting across the Big Pond,
Just spent the most valuable thing I have (my time) with you. Learning from your EADIM 2011 presentation. Gaining information that is precious, timeless and able to be utilized (isn’t it spelled utilised? in Queens English? That’s how my maternal grandfather always spelled it having been born on the Irish Sea but growing up in and residing as a citizen of Glasgow, Scotland in the early 1900’s ) in the most profitable way. That is profitable, if people really listen to what you are saying. Digesting and assimilating and then implementing the principles…putting what you say into massive actions using the weapons available to us.
I say thank you, for I have garnered several quotes to use in my upcoming blog posts/articles on my website. [www.dancemancopywriting.com] I will attribute the quotes accordingly. [Specifically you said ” something you know about your customer is more important than any product or service” – Drayton Bird/EADIM 2011.]
I shall use it in my article call the “The Value of Your Database” which I shall write shortly…In addition I would hope that you have no objection if I use some of the other things you say as nuggets, in the golden threads, of my sales copy when I feel it is appropriate…Thank you
Drayton,
You are one of the world’s and nations’ treasures. Including the nation of “Direct and Interactive Advertising.”
Gary B., Clayton M. , and David O. have praised you…praise not easy to come by as you well know…impressive !!
Although we have never met personally, I can perceive that deep inside you really are quite a humble man. You have seen and felt much. Both good and not so good. Professionally and personally. You have overcome various life challenges and keep moving forward despite the adversity. Offering the best you have to the ones who shall follow in your footsteps. Not that they may be copying you verbatim, but learning from you to create their own personality. Learning from the “51” and “31” and other nuggets of gold you offer at far below their actual value. Allowing others to be extremely fortunate due to your unparalleled generosity. You are blessed…with a great gift…a common sense gift…and you speak so simply as to make the “dim-wit” who is “deaf” get it. Your words shall penetrate many a mind for generations to come. But wait there’s more… more for you to read…
I personally noted and shall adopt the way you ended your EADIM 2011 presentation. No big fanfare, no big sell but rather you said:
“This is what I think it’s all about” You presented the slide of the Aristotle quote, had a few seconds of silence, and then simply said ‘ Thank you.”
Well done, my mentor and friend. If I may address you as that…my expectation is to look forward to corresponding with you, continually…until you say stop.
I wonder what your thoughts were as you walked away….eyes lowered to the floor in front of you…at the end of that presentation…do you think you might recall them? Would you be willing to share them with a friend, for conversation’s sake? Shall I write the article/blog post “A Master’s Thoughts – Did I Get Through to Just One?” The message intent that if you got through to just one then you can get through to the thousands. Aka Claude Hopkins “We cannot go after thousands of men until we learn how to win one.” A favorite quote of mine. I use it often
Some personal thoughts on today’s interactive marketing you might deem worthy to look into – in reference to testing and crafting a personalized experience – with all the information that people willingly reveal on Facebook/Twitter/or other social mediums, do you think it might be a reasonable idea to look at the targeted person’s affinities such as their extra-curricular desires, (say for example swimming) to put in a database and use as a door…a door to create a more direct influence… for getting prospects/customers to buy any particular product or service?
I ask because until you sent me the email that referenced “taking the plunge” to join Ask Drayton which set off the success feeling I had as a long distance swimmer of over 30 years ago I had been indecisive on spending the trivial amount of money you asked for in making the commitment to you. I will look for your personalised response…
By the way I enjoyed the interview you did with Ian Brodie.
Would you be interested in doing a live interview with Michael Senoff from San Diego, CA. If that could be arranged?
Michael an I are currently doing business together and I am looking to help him build more value in his offerings…
It’s what he dedicated his life to…creating a lasting record of the greatest individuals in our direct and interactive response industry.
Again I will look for your response and make what ever arrangements are necessary to make this possible.Tell me exactly how you want to proceed…how it might fit within your schedule…
A second opportunity that I wish to offer you is that of coming to give a presentation at the next American Writer’s and Artists Inc. Boot Camp being held in Delray Beach, Florida USA later this year. I will contact the Executive Director Katie Yeakle and the President Rebecca Matter on your behalf… if you think it to profitable for you…We Americans are still fascinated by the British way of doing things… as Clayton Makepeace’s testimony says of you ” I am at a loss for words” Come educate us…I would be confident that many of the top writers in the USA would have a keen interest in whatever you might have to share and likely attend…
In a recent interview between Porter Stansbury and James Altucher – two titans of American Direct Response – who agree that we ought to be “guided by the idea of gratitude” James says: ” people need to realize you make money when you help others make more money”
Such an interview could do just that. Above and beyond what your current offerings are…for a price you are willing to accept…and furthermore…
If in the words of David Deutsch recently written to me on another project ” getting them to implement could be a challenge” meaning getting people
prospects who are willing to open their wallets to buy the knowledge you offer. I would be honored to write the copy…with your watchful guidance…
I will look for your personalized response…towards this little idea…maybe a profitable little idea…
My best wishes for a prosperous 2016.

Thank you, John Paul.
This business is growing so fast it’s hard to keep up with what’s happening
So as chance would have it, Michael Senoff did interview me a couple of years ago – and I him.
He has a wonderful simplicity, both in copy and in the way he runs his business.
I have also spoken at AWAI – I think I have a video of it somewhere.
In fact I’ve been speaking on and off in the US since 1984 and I love American audiences – mainly because they are so enthusiastic.
So all invitations gratefully received!
Hi Drayton
Would it be possible to see the AWAI recording please ?
Many thanks Carl
Hi Carl,
I’ve sent you an e-mail on the subject.
Best,
Kelly

Hi Drayton! How do I get access to the How To Write and Persuade Better series of videos? I had them when I joined, but can’t seem to find them now. Thanks in advance!
